Meet the Healthwatch Gloucestershire Steering Group

Alan Thomas

Steering Group Chair

Alan, who is now retired, spent many years in teaching and in the Royal Air Force as a Training Officer, where he worked for 23 years. Married, he has three children and three grandchildren.  Since retiring in 2013, he has become increasingly involved as a volunteer in the governance of local NHS services.  Alan’s personal and family experience with health and care issues motivated him to help improve the quality of care for people in Gloucestershire.  “My family has experienced a wide range of long-term health conditions over the years which have required the assistance of a variety of health and social care services, some here in Gloucestershire.  I am keen to put something back into the system that has helped me over many years.  I am excited by the prospect of being able to begin to shape an approach to the representation of views on health and social care in Gloucestershire that will build on the excellent work done already.”

Eileen Morrison

Steering Group Member

Eileen is a retired civil servant. She wants timely access to good quality health and social care for all the people of Gloucestershire. She has been on the boards of Age UK Gloucestershire, the Students Union of the University of Gloucestershire, and the previous HWG organisation. Eileen does casual work as an exams invigilator, and is a volunteer for schools admissions appeals panels. She combines the health and education themes in helping recruit students for the new nursing degree course at the University of Gloucestershire, where she also volunteers as a simulated patient. Eileen is married and lives in Cheltenham.

Bob Lloyd-Smith

Steering Group Member

Bob had a career in journalism and news production in newspapers radio and television.  On leaving the BBC after 20 years he studied as a performance coach and obtained a university master’s degree in work psychology trying to figure out how and why people behave the way they do in the workplace.  He has worked with NHS England as a public/patient leader in Gloucestershire and for the past two years has worked with the 2gether NHS Foundation Trust as a Mental Health Act Manager covering Gloucestershire and Herefordshire.  Bob also volunteers with the Managing Memory team based at Charlton Lane Hospital in Cheltenham, assisting them in running their dementia awareness courses for service users and their carers.  “I see first hand much of the remarkable care provided by the health professionals and their support staff but also get to hear directly from service users about the care they receive.  To me, Healthwatch Gloucestershire offers a really user friendly and safe way of allowing those in need of Health and Social Care in the county to say what they think of the service they receive.”  Bob is a governor at a primary school in Cheltenham, he is on the management team of a local community association and has lived in Gloucestershire for 30 years.
