Enter and View: Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, Respiratory Unit

Our staff and volunteers visited the Respiratory Unit at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on 24th September 2025.

Enter and View visits are a way that we can gather information about services and collect views of service users, their carers, staff and relatives.

Following on from our visit, we have made some recommendations to the service provider based on the feedback we have received and what we observed.

Key findings

  • Staff and patients highlighted a positive culture and experience on the ward.
  • Issues around discharge were raised by staff who recognised that there can be delays when onward care in the community is needed.
  • Patients who had been readmitted to the ward (3 out of a sample of 16) felt that they had been discharged too early.
  • The food was ‘hit and miss’; comments ranged from good to poor.
  • Deconditioning was recognised by staff and management as an issue.

What people told us

  • "Staff are very respectful. I know if I have an issue I can talk to staff."
  • "I get on quite well with the nurses. They’re very helpful and do their best. Very friendly."
  • Staff commented on issues around discharge, saying that it was "frustrating finding a social care package" and "challenging finding support".
